Porcelain Veneers Q&A
What are porcelain veneers?
Veneers are custom-made shells of porcelain that Dr. Casey bonds to the surface of your teeth. They are thin, natural-looking, and stain resistant. Once placed, they can transform the shape, color, and size of your teeth.
An alternative to dental crowns, veneers are best-suited for the teeth in front of your mouth, which others see when you smile.
What can porcelain veneers treat?
Veneers cover imperfections in your smile and protect your teeth against further damage. These porcelain restorations may be right for you if you have:
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked or broken teeth
- Yellow or discolored teeth
- Worn teeth from grinding
- Crooked teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Overly short or large teeth
- Gapped teeth
At your initial consultation, Dr. Casey performs a comprehensive dental exam to help you determine if veneers are right for you. Trained by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Casey assesses your facial structure, eye color, skin color, and more to create veneers that subtly enhance your appearance.
What happens during the veneers process?
Porcelain veneers typically take at least two visits to prepare and place. At your first appointment, Dr. Casey prepares your teeth for veneers by removing a small portion of your tooth enamel.
This hard layer is outside of your teeth and protects your smile from damage and decay. By buffing and reshaping your enamel, Dr. Casey makes room for your new veneers. This step ensures that your veneers are as thick as the rest of your teeth.
Next, Dr. Casey takes an impression of your teeth to serve as a model for your custom-made veneers. It takes about 2-3 weeks to create porcelain veneers, so Dr. Casey fits you for a temporary restoration at the end of your visit.
When you return to Dr. Casey’s office, she removes the temporary veneers and cleanses and etches your teeth to help them adhere to the permanent restoration. Finally, she uses a special bonding solution to cement the veneers to your teeth. Dr. Casey further bonds your teeth with a special light beam.
